Distinguished Speaker Series with Steve King

May 4th
Presentation 6-7 PM
Cocktails on the Porch 7 PM

Join us at the Custom House for a presentation from the King of parades. Like Stanley Papio, the parade’s namesake, Steve King is an outsider artist that has left his mark on the Key’s community through his social commentary. Over the past 15 years, his creations have featured in the annual Fantasy Fest Parade, often placing or winning the event. His spectacular Steam Punk contraption in 2016 and Sailing Boat in 2017 helped catapult the Papio Kinetic Parade into the nations eye.
What is so compelling about King and longtime collaborator Rick Kieth’s commitment to their art is the selfless approach to conceptualizing and designing a focus piece while providing workshops for parade participants to create costumes to compliment the float. The workshops became social events creating assembly line costume creations that would draw a large and visually stunning crowd of participants. Their team’s winning float “Flight of Plutonians” was a paradoy on the downgrading of Pluto to a dwarf planet. Up to 250 members of the community assembled at King’s Stock Island studio in the evenings leading up to the 2007 parade to create elaborate costumes that were designed to accompany the award-winning float. Other floats of note include “Attack of the Killer Alien Elvis Clones,” “Intergalactic News Network,” and “Invasion of the Lion Fish.
King’s community interaction does not stop at float building. Using found objects and parts sourced from labs he has created an interactive piece called the “Brain Scan.” Dressed as a mad scientist King carries the elaborate apparatus to community events and takes images of peoples “brains” and “energy.” This type of performance art is designed to evoke a myriad of questions and conversations from participants.
While King is recognized as a community artist, he is in demand as a houseboat builder. His environmentally friendly boats have been featured on several TV shows. Most recently “My Floating Home” on the FYI network called attention to the ShantyCat, a unique tiny floating home that can access sandbars and fishing grounds.
Immediately following The Art of Parades, presented by Steve King, join us on the porch of the Custom House for a sunset happy hour to help kick off the Papio Kinetic Sculpture Parade

Join us for the Papio Kinetic Parade After Party Festival & Concert featuring Poi Dog Pondering at the Truman Waterfront Amphitheater. Food Trucks, Kids Zone, Parade Floats on display and Tons of Fun!
Unique, diverse, and creative as the Key West community, so goes the music of Poi Dog Pondering . A musical collaboration that is independent and undefined compared to other genres and bands. Poi Dog Pondering’s success is rooted in their eclectic mix of rock, soul, folk, and electronic arrangements that seem to get everyone in the room moving and wanting more. Orchestral and poetic in an understated way, the feel good fun and professional talent of this band is infectious. Join us as we welcome this widely successful band to our island for a Key West dance party to celebrate the legacy of Stanley Papio and the creative spirit that is alive in our community today at the Papio Kinetic Parade after party…May 5th, Truman Waterfront Park Amphitheater.
Poi dog pondering keeps thriving because their ethic has always been about following their musical heart. Their steadfast independence has allowed them to perennially bloom. Multi Racial, Omni sexual, and unafraid to be themselves, they prowl the musical landscape with a hungry belly. They seem to live in a frame of mind more akin to the 30's and 40's Bohemians.
Known as "The little big band with the strong back and supple / stubborn heart", PDP has been following it's intuition for 25 years now. From bohemian street buskers to impossible to market major label sacrificial lambs... Poi dog pondering have ripened into staunchly independent musical voyagers. They have let every sound that excited them flow through their music and flood it with ever changing colors; Rock and soul. Orchestral, acoustic and electronic textures. Americana, rock band disco and international musics. All threaded along the way with lyrics that embrace the beauty and pain that life can bring.
